LEXINGTON, Ky. - Natalie Tanner advanced to the NCAA Final in the 10,000m run on day one of the NCAA East Prelims at the University of Kentucky.

During the lone final on the first day, the senior put up a personal best 33:41.65 to claim fifth place in a crowded field of 48 runners. The result was good enough to be among the top-12 runners, as Tanner returns to Eugene for the NCAA Finals for the second straight year. A season ago, the Rye, New York, native made the field in the 5,000m run - an event that Tanner will compete in on Saturday during the East Prelims.

Also making the 10,000m field at the East Prelims was first-year Abby McLaughlin who impressed with a 26th place finish at 34:59.50.

Many other first round events took place on day one, as the Columbia men send a pair of runners on to the next round in the 1,500m. Robert Napolitano advances to Saturday's quarterfinal after winning his heat in 3:50.83. Sam Ritz will join Napolitano, after clocking a 3:50.90 in his heat, which placed him sixth, but was fast enough to get into the quarterfinal.

The men and women both advanced one of two athletes in the 800m run, with Sarah Hardie's 2:08.61 being good enough to get through, while Alek Sauer's 1:49.73 helped him to advance to the next round. Both Hardie and Sauer will run in the quarterfinal on Friday evening.

In the women's 400m run, Akua Obeng-Akrofi clocked the ninth fastest time at 53.19, helping her move on to Friday's quarterfinal. The 400m will be the first of two races for the junior on Friday at 5:30 p.m., with the first round of the 200m starting two hours later.

Four other Lions compete in their first events on Friday, with Nell Crosby and Erin Melly taking part in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, Keenan Piper competing in the men's steeplechase, and Robert O'Brien soaring in the pole vault.
