DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – The second day of the South Beach Duals has come to a close, as the Columbia wrestling posted a slew of victories against some tough competition.

The Lions dropped duals to No. 16 Minnesota and North Dakota State on the day, falling to 0-4 on the young season.

Columbia opened the day with the Golden Gophers, who took the first three matches, before Jacob Macalolooy’s opponent did not come out at 149, making the Minnesota lead 16-6. At 157, Jake Short took down Markus Scheidel in the sudden victory period to post a 3-1 win, as Scheidel fell for the first time this season.

Minnesota would continue to impress in the upper weights, before Garrett Ryan posted his third win of the weekend in the heavyweight bout, topping Rylee Streifel, 6-2, to make it a 35-9 final.

In the second dual of the day, North Dakota State jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the first four bouts, which included bonus points in the opening pair of matches. Macalolooy was edged 5-2 by Kyle Gilva at 149, before Scheidel got Columbia on the board with a 17-8 major decision of Nick Mergen.

The Bison posted back-to-back victories at 165 and 174, before Anthony Piscopo earned his first career dual win with a 9-5 decision over Nick Knutson. North Dakota State took the 197-pound bout again, but Garrett Ryan improved to 4-0 on the weekend and 15-3 on the season with a 7-4 decision against Daniel Stibral.

The home season opens for Columbia next on Saturday, Jan. 6, when Buffalo visits University Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. dual.
