NEW YORK – The first meet of the 2018 calendar year takes place Saturday for the Columbia track & field teams, when the Lions travel to Staten Island for the Great Dane Classic.

Albany will play host at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, with live stats available through the venue’s webpage.

Most of Columbia’s sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers are slated to compete in the second indoor meet of the season, as the Lions are coming off a stellar first outing at the Metro Season Opener back in December.

In a meet that also took place at Ocean Breeze, Columbia’s men’s and women’s teams combined to win nine events. Sophomore Daniel Igbokwe led the men to titles in the long jump and triple jump, while junior Ian Reinicke was second in the long jump and third in the triple. Sam Ritz took the tape in the Mile run, leading a pack of Lions who claimed spots 2-5. The other victory for the men came from Robert O’Brien, who won the pole vault by clearing 4.80m.

The Columbia women were dominant in the sprints, with Akua Obeng-Akrofi claiming the 60m title, and Aminat Iriafen was first in the 200m. In the field events, Alexis Turley-Young was victorious in the long jump, Abigail Sharkey was first in the pole vault, and Maryam Hassan scored a gold medal in the triple jump.
