NEW YORK – Columbia University Athletics announced today that it has renewed its broadcast contract with local radio station AM 970 The Apple to provide exclusive commercial over-the-air coverage of select Columbia football and men’s basketball games.

The commercial radio broadcasts will be simulcast on the official Columbia Athletics website, gocolumbialions.com. In addition, exclusive commercial audio webcasts of every Columbia football and men’s basketball game as well as select women’s basketball contests will be streamed live over gocolumbialions.com.

“We are excited to renew our partnership with AM 970 for the 2008-09 year,” says Alex Oberweger, Columbia’s Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications. “With AM 970’s expanded signal coverage, we will be able to provide even more of our fans with the best coverage of the Columbia Lions.”

Sean O’Neill, General Manager of Salem Media of New York, adds, “AM 970 The Apple is thrilled to be associated with the university of Columbia’s prestige.”

Coverage of Columbia football on AM 970 The Apple gets underway this Saturday, September 27 when the Lions take on the Towson Tigers in Baltimore, Maryland at 2:45 p.m.

Local New York sportscaster Jerry Recco returns for the third straight year as the Voice of the Columbia Lions. He will be joined in the booth by Jake Novak '92CC on football broadcasts and former Columbia basketball player Dalen Cuff '06CC for basketball. All home football games can be heard online at gocolumbialions.com.

“Continuing our exclusive commercial radio and internet coverage brings our athletics program to a wide New York City audience,” notes Barry Neuberger, Associate Athletics Director for Sports Marketing. “This is a great opportunity for our sponsors to reach a broader audience and for the community to get involved with our teams.”

In addition to commercial coverage of the Columbia Lions on gocolumbialions.com and AM 970 The Apple, Columbia University’s student-operated radio station WKCR-FM will continue its non-commercial coverage of select Columbia athletics contests throughout the year.

“We are proud to afford WKCR an opportunity to participate in the coverage of Columbia athletics this season,” adds Oberweger, a one-time WKCR-FM board member and sportscaster. “Granting Columbia students the opportunity to learn valuable media skills through collaboration with our athletics program provides a great benefit for the university community.”
