Menís Tennis Wraps Up Day One of Columbia Classic
NEW YORK - The Columbia men's tennis team completed the first day of competition at the Columbia Classic Friday, advancing two players into the quarterfinals of the 'A' singles draw and another in the 'B' draw.
Dragos Ignat and Bert Vancura each won their opening round matches in the 'A' draw in straight sets Friday. Going up against Andres Alban from NJIT, Ignat posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory. He will meet Fordham's Srikar Alla in the quarterfinals Saturday at 9 a.m.
Vancura will also be back on the court at 9 a.m. following his first round win over Fairfield's Dennis Zlobinsky, 6-3, 6-1. Dragos Dima from Cornell will be across the net from Vancura in Saturday's quarterfinal matchup.
In the 'B' singles draw, Columbia's Daniel Morgan advanced to the quarterfinals with a come-from-behind win over NJIT's Petr Rousar. Rousar took the opening set, 6-4, but Morgan came back to win the second, 6-3, and the tie-breaker, 1-0(4). He will face Hugo Morth from St. John's Saturday.
Ian Lester was also in action in the 'B' draw for the Lions, falling in three sets to Marist's Dalen Klassen, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(5).
Chris Sabaitis and Eric Jacobs represented Columbia in the 'C' singles draw, but each fell in the first round.
In doubles action, Ignat and Vancura secured an 8-4 win over NJIT's Rousar and Artursson in the first round, but dropped a close quarterfinal match to St. John's Mihai and Mozr, 9-7. In the 'B' draw, Cornell's duo of Berman and Wilton topped Morgan and Sam Gelb, 8-6.
Play on Saturday will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day.
