EASTON, Pa. - With its first road test of the season, the Columbia women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-9 decision at Lafayette on Wednesday, February 27.  A tough battle in the first half left the Lions only trailing 7-5 at the break, but the Leopards pulled away in the second half outscoring Columbia 9-4. Senior Kacie Johnson lead the Lions offense with four goals and junior Paige Cuscovitch claimed her second straight hat trick of the season.

Columbia found the back of the net first in the game with a Cuscovitch goal just three minutes in. Lafayette responded with two goals of their own, a trend that made for one tough half on the Lions. A free-position shot for the score by Kelly Buechel, tied the game at 2-2 with 13:10 remaining in the first. For the second time, the Leopards would string together another pair of goals before the next Columbia score at 6:45 by Johnson, to take a 4-3 edge.

Columbia would trail 6-3 after two straight goals in four minutes by Lafayette, but the Lions closed the half with a pair of goals by Johnson and Buechel to trim the deficit to 6-5. Just seconds before the break, Lafayette's Addie Godfrey scored her third goal of the half to give the Leopards a 7-5 halftime lead.

In the second half, Lafayette would strike first with another goal from Godfrey. She went on to lead all scorers with seven goals on the day. Cuscovitch answered with a goal at 27:20 and also responded to another pair of Lafayette goals with a score at 13:19.

With the score at 10-7, the Leopards scored four unanswered goals to push the Columbia deficit to 14-7 midway through the second half. Johnson claimed the last two Columbia goals on the night and six different Leopards scored for Lafayette as they hand the Lions a 16-9 loss.

Up next, the 1-1 Lions will jump into Ivy League play on Saturday, March 2 when they travel to Brown for a 1 p.m. game.
