Baseball Hits the Road for Tuesday Matchup at Rutgers
NEW YORK - The Columbia baseball team will hit the road for a midweek matchup against Rutgers at Bainton Field on Tuesday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m.
Rutgers (11-12, 5-1 BIG EAST) hosts Columbia in its 2013 home opener at Bainton Field in Piscataway, N.J. The Scarlet Knights have won eight of 11 of their last contests and are coming off a sweep of conference rival Villanova. Rutgers finished off the sweep on Saturday by a 9-4 score as the Scarlet Knights tied a season-high with 16 hits on the day.
Offensively, Vinny Zarrollo currently leads Rutgers with a .386 batting average, .469 on-base percentage, 32 hits and a 1.000 stolen base percentage. Charlie Law holds a team-high 13 RBI on the year.
On the mound, Rob Smorol holds a team-best 2.38 ERA with three wins on the year.
COLUMBIA VS. RUTGERS
Columbia and Rutgers have met every year for the past 24 seasons. Last year, Columbia rallied from deficits of 4-1 and 6-5 late in the game and won in the 10th when Justin Wong scored from third base on a passed ball with two outs, giving the Lions a wild 7-6 comeback victory in the final game of a week-long homestand.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lions opened the 2013 Ivy League slate with a doubleheader sweep of Harvard, notching a 5-0 shutout victory behind the arm of David Speer and a 3-2 win over the Crimson after a walkoff RBI single by Gus Craig in the bottom of the ninth. The Lions dropped both ends of their doubleheader against Dartmouth on Sunday by 3-2 and 7-4 scores.
