NEW YORK – Both Phoenetia Browne and Elly McGuffog capitalized on an excellent passing day for Beverly Leon as the Columbia women’s soccer team defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology 2-0 at Columbia Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night. The Lions outshot the Highlanders 20-2 in a dominating performance to improve to 6-3-2 on the season.
A relentless attack in the first half gave Columbia the lead with a score at the 37th minute. After some aggressive play in the box, Natalie Melo moved the ball to Leon who found Browne five feet in front of the goal for the score. The tally marked Browne’s second goal of the season as the junior continues to have a breakout offensive year.
Jourdan Sayers saw her first action in goal this season to start the game. The New Jersey native held the Highlanders scoreless in the first half to give the Lions a 1-0 lead at the break.
At the 70th minute mark, Columbia extended its lead after Leon led McGuffog with a pass just inside the right of the box for her third goal of the season. Leon’s pair of assists on Monday night lifts her season total to a career best of five, surpassing her previous season record of four during her freshman year in 2010.
With the 2-0 win, the Lions remain unbeaten in its last three home games and record its sixth shutout on the year. Columbia will look to extend its streak at home on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3:30 p.m. as they return to Ivy League play to face Penn.
