NEW YORK - Columbia rallied from a 3-1 deficit to cut the lead to one in the final minutes of play, but could not net the equalizer before falling to Delaware 3-2 at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue on Sunday, October 20.

Columbia fell to 6-8 overall, while Delaware improved to 10-4.

Delaware got on the board first with a goal in the fourth minute of the game.  Toni Popinko scored on an assist from Michaela Patzner that went just left of the diving Columbia goalie Kimberly Pianucci.  

The Blue Hens only enjoyed the lead for five minues, as Christina Freibott scored her fourth goal of the season on a pass from Leah Matthews off a corner. Freibott also assisted three of Columbia's four goals in their overtime win over Penn on Friday.

Columbia dominated possession for the next 13 minutes before Kasey Prettyman netted the go-ahead goal in the 22nd minute.  Prettyman scored off a rebound of a Pianucci save. 

Delaware added an insurance goal in the 31st minute when Meghan Winesett scored unassisted.

The second period was an even battle, with Delaware holing a shot advantage 6-4, but Columbia dominating on corners 6-3.  

Lauren Skudalski cut the lead to one late in the second half with her third goal of the year.  Skudalski collected a pass from Danielle Cosentino off a corner to score in the 62nd minute.  

For the game Delaware held a 14-11 shot advantage, while Columbia had 10 corners to the Blue Hens' five.  

Delaware's goalkeeper Sarah Scher recorded four saves in the first period to keep Delaware close while the Lions were holding possession. 

Columbia returns to action on Sunday, October 27 at Dartmouth for a game set to begin at noon.
