No. 19 Menís Tennis Sweeps No. 34 Harvard, 7-0
NEW YORK – The No. 19 Columbia men’s tennis team posted its second straight 7-0 victory over an Ivy League foe, defeating No. 34 Harvard at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
Columbia began with a sweep of the three doubles matches. Winston Lin and Mike Vermeer posted an 8-4 score over Brian Yeung and Nicky Hu in the No. 2 match, while No. 12 Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur picked up an 8-7 decision in the top match over the 11th-ranked Dennis Nguyen and Casey MacMaster. Bert Vancura and Richard Pham followed suit with their own 8-7 win in the No. 3 match.
Dragos Ignat raced away with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 2 singles match against Sebastian Beltrame to put the Lions ahead 2-0.
The remainder of the singles matches would all take three sets to decide. Schnur and Narayana each battled back after dropping the opening sets to win the No. 3 and 4 matches, respectively. Vermeer recorded a strong 6-1 first set in the No. 6 match, but dropped a tight second set 3-6 to Andrew Ball. Vermeer turned the tables in the decisive set, carding his own 7-5 score to capture the win.
No. 14 Lin and Vancura each split the first two sets of their respective matches, and earned the wins when their opponents retired in the third set.
Dartmouth visits the Dick Savitt Tennis Center tomorrow at 1 p.m.
