Waverly Neer Breaks 5,000m Record At Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. – The Columbia track and field team sent a few Lions out west this weekend to compete in the Stanford Invitational on Friday, April 4 – April 5. The Lions kicked-off its outdoor season in the 30-year meet that saw entries from over 100 teams.

On opening day, Waverly Neer got off to a fantastic start to the outdoor year with a record-setting performance in the women’s 5000m run. Neer clocked in with a program record time of 15:37.85 for a top-10 finish. The junior bested the previous record time of 15:57.44 set by Caroline Bierbaum in 2005 by more than 19 seconds.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday, April 12 with a pair of meets in the south, including the Joe Hilton Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. and the Mason Spring Invitational in Fairfax,Va.
