NEW YORK – Columbia field hockey head coach Marybeth Freeman has announced the 2014 fall schedule for the Lions’ program that will embark on its 19th season of competition.

Columbia will host nine contests at the Baker Athletics Complex, play eight non-conference games and continue the standard round robin, seven-game format in Ivy League play. Additionally, the Lions are set to square off against four 2013 NCAA Tournament squads.

“We are excited for another great year of high level competition,” Freeman stated. “I know the group of returners we had this past spring, in combination with the incoming class joining our squad, will be up for the challenge.”

The action will begin at home against LaSalle on Friday, Sep. 5 at 5 p.m. After a trip to Storrs to face defending National Champions Connecticut on Sep. 7, the Lions return home for tilts versus Villanova (Sep. 13) and Fairfield (Sep. 14).

On Sep. 20, Ancient Eight play commences with a road game at Brown and Columbia will remain in Rhode Island to take on Providence the next day.

The Lions open up a season-long three-game homestand on Sep. 27 with games against Cornell, Georgetown (Sep. 28) and defending Ivy League Champions, Princeton (Oct. 5).

The rest of the out-of-conference slate includes matches at Hofstra (Oct. 5) and Delaware (Oct. 19) and home games against Towson (Oct. 10) and UMass (Oct. 12).

Columbia travels to Penn on Oct. 18 and will celebrate the Class of 2015 on Senior Day against Dartmouth on Oct. 26. The Lions will conclude the regular season with trips to Yale (Nov. 1) and Harvard (Nov. 8).

“Our 2014 schedule reflects a good mix of conferences, some new opponents and some local rivals,” said Freeman. “We talk a lot about wanting to see what we’re capable of doing: to put ourselves out there and take the challenge, to learn, to excel. This group can do that and I’m excited to watch it unfold this upcoming season.”
