NEW YORK - In the first dual match action of the season, the Columbia wrestling team was defeated by No. 17 Rutgers and Maryland during the Grapple at the Garden.

With the pair of losses at Madison Square Garden, the Lions start the dual season at 0-2.

Columbia and the Scarlet Knights took part in the first dual of the day, with Garrett Ryan picking up the lone Lions win in the team loss. Rutgers was victorious by a 39-3 margin, earning bonus points in four matches.

The Lions got off to a good start in the second dual behind rookie Alec Kelly. After a Columbia forefit at 125 pounds made it a 6-0 Maryland lead, Kelly tied it up with a second period pin of Alex Vargas, which was his second win via fall of the season.

With the score tied 6-6, the Terrapins would go on to win the next seven matches, before Ryan came up with another victory in the heavyweight bout. After a pair of wins today, the No. 19 heavyweight wrestler is now off to a 6-0 start in 2016.

Columbia will now look ahead to the Cliff Keen Invitational, which gets under way on Friday, Dec. 2 in Las Vegas.
