State College, PA – Men's fencing finished with five wins and just one loss on Sunday at the Penn State Invitational.

The day started with a dominant effort over UNC (20-7), in which men's foil went 8-1 to secure the victory. James Sands and Sam Moelis did not give up a bout between the two of them.

Next up was Haverford, who Columbia handled easily. The win included a 9-0 mark in sabre, headlined by seniors Chris Ahn and Maciej Biernacki, and freshman Alexander Walker III. Columbia has beat Haverford in five straight seasons.

Right before the afternoon break, Columbia beat Yale 17-10. Chris Ahn (sabre) and Gabe Canaux (epee) won all three of their bouts.

Penn State and Columbia headlined the marquee matchup at the invitational, and it lived up to the hype. With the score tied at 13, Penn State’s sabreist Matthew Lewicki was able to edge out Michael Costin, 5-2, in the final bout of the match to secure the Nittany Lion win. This marked the first loss of the season for Columbia men's fencing.

But the loss did not linger long for the Lions. Columbia beat Duke 14-13 in the next match. Epee (6-3) carried the load for the Lions, with Mick Yamanaka going undefeated.

In the final match of the day, Columbia beat UPenn, 17-10. Junior Porter Hesslegrave and senior Michael Costin won all of their bouts to end the day on a high note.

Fencing will be back in action this Saturday, January 21st for the St. Johns Invitational in Queens. Columbia will face St. John’s, Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State and Harvard. There will be no rest for the weary as the Lions will host Notre Dame, St. Johns and Wayne State the next day at Columbia.
