STATE COLLEGE, PA – Columbia Women's fencing posted a perfect 6-0 mark at the Penn State Invitational in State College on Sunday.
Next up was Temple and things did not start out so promising. Columbia was down 3-8 until they surged back to win the last 8 of 11 bouts for the come from behind win (16-11).
Right before the afternoon break, the women took down Yale 22-5. The Lions owed the victory in part to the first of two undefeated foil squad performances of the day, headlined by Taffel, Laffey, and freshman Ester Schreiber.
In front of the home crowd, the women beat one of their strongest NCAA opponents, Penn State, 16-11, for the second straight year at the Penn State invitational. The women’s foil squad again proved to be the backbone of the team, going undefeated 9-0 with Schreiber, Margaret Lu, and Iman Blow. Lu was the only Columbia fencer to not lose a single bout throughtout the entire day.
Columbia beat Duke (20-7) and Ivy League rival, UPenn (15-12) to cap off the undefeated day at the Invitational. The Lions epee fencers zipped the Blue Devils, thanks to perfect 3-0 records from Mason Speta, Katie Angen and Elise Gout.
Columbia fencing will be back in action this Saturday, January 21st for the St. John’s Invitational in Queens. Columbia will face St. John’s, Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State and Harvard. No rest for the weary as the Lions will host Notre Dame, St. Johns and Wayne State the next day at Columbia.
