HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss’ Leemarcus Boyd notched a game-winning single to lift the Golden Eagles to a 4-3 victory over the Columbia baseball team. The Lions (0-8) led 3-1 after three innings, but Southern Miss (12-4) scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings before Boyd’s heroics in the ninth.

The Lions played strong defense, turning six double plays on the night. Randell Kanemaru extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 2-for-4 performance.

Southern Miss posed a huge threat early, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first after two walks sandwiched between a double. The Golden Eagles opened the scoring with a sac fly to left, but starting pitcher Jack Harlan limited the damage by using his long reach to field a chopper to his right, fired to second to start a 1-4-3 double play.

Second baseman Kyle Bartelman saved another run scoring, diving towards the bag second to snag a line drive and touched his bag to retire the side in the bottom of the second before the Lions got on the board.

Mark Patrick Flynn worked a leadoff walk, moved to second on a passed ball and came around when Joe Engel singled up the middle to even things up at 1-1. Julian Bury laid down a sacrifice try, but a throwing error on the play allowed Engel to come in all the way from first to give Columbia the lead. With Bury on third, Ben Porter flied out to deep left to drive home the insurance run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Dylan Burdeaux notched a double to deep leftfield and scored on a sacrifice fly. With runners on second and third, Liam McGill made a great grab on a hard-hit ball to keep the Lions in front. However, pinch hitter Mason Irby started the seventh with a double, was pushed to third on a bunt and scored when Boyd delivered a base-hit to left, leveling the game at 3-3.

Irby worked a one-out walk in the ninth and a groundout advanced him into scoring position before Boyd took the first pitch for a hit down the leftfield line to end the ballgame.

Leo Pollack (0-1) took the decision. He threw 2.1 innings and allowed just the one hit and struck out two batters.

For Southern Miss, Nick Sandin struck out the side in order in the ninth to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Columbia wraps up the two-game series with the Golden Eagles tomorrow, March 15. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. ET.
