ST. LOUIS – Day one of the NCAA Wrestling Championships is in the books, as Tyrel White and Garrett Ryan were two of 330 wrestlers at the event at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

The tournament for White ended with a pair of losses, while Ryan will return for the second day after going 1-1.

Ryan got things started against Newton Smerchek from Central Michigan, in a rematch of the Columbia junior’s win from the Midlands Championships. The two heavyweights were tied 1-1 after regulation, but a quick takedown by Ryan in the first sudden victory period led to a 3-1 victory, and a match with the No. 1 seeded Kyle Snyder from Ohio State.

Against the reigning NCAA Champ and Olympic Gold medalist, Ryan was upended by a 23-7 margin.

The following day, the Scottsdale, Arizona, native took on Oklahoma's Ross Larson, who topped Princeton's Ross Larson in the consolation bracket. Ryan picked up an early takedown against Larson, before the Oklahoma heavyweight got out and grabbed one for himself. The Columbia junior added a point on an escape, but back points helped Larson to a 10-3 defeat, in Ryan’s final match of the tournament.

White was one of the first wrestlers to take the mat, squaring off with Luke Zilverberg from South Dakota State. The two 165-pounders went back and forth in the first, with Zilverberg picking up a takedown, White escaping and getting one of his own, before Zilverberg scored a reversal. After a scoreless second, White made it a 5-5 match late in the third, before an escape gave Zilverberg a 6-5 win.

The loss to the Jackrabbit junior set up a rematch with Brooks Martino of Penn in the consolation bracket for White. The first two periods went scoreless, but Martino ended White’s tournament with a takedown and nearfall points in the third, during an 8-0 loss.
