NEW YORK - The No. 25 ranked Columbia men's tennis team picked up its second win of the season over No. 20 Cornell, 4-1, earning its first victory of the Ivy League season today in front of a packed house at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
With the win, the Lions improve to 12-3 overall, and 1-0 in Ancient Eight play, while the Big Red drop to 15-3 overall and 0-1 in the Ivy League.
Today's triumph is the second season over Cornell, as Columbia also beat the Big Red by a 4-1 margin back on Feb. 19 during the ECAC Championship.
Columbia got things started with a double point victory, taking both the second and third matches. Shawn Hadavi and Jackie Tang were the first to seal a win, topping Chris Vrabel and Bernardo Casares Rosa, 6-3. Shortly thereafter, Michal Rolski and Christopher Grant got by Al Hill and Lev Kazakov by the same score, sending the match into singles play with the Lions ahead, 1-0.
Hadavi was dominant in the top match of singles play, finishing first and giving the Lions a 2-0 lead in the process by upending David Volfson, 6-1, 6-2, improving to 10-3 on the season. In the second match, Victor Pham gave the Lions a 3-0 lead when he defeated Sinclair, 7-5, 6-2, earning his eighth win of the spring.
Cornell would not go away easily, as Pietro Rimodini knocked off William Matheson in the fifth match, 7-5, 6-3. With the Lions leading 3-1 and the third and fourth matches going into a third set, Timothy Wang clinched things for Columbia. After the sophomore battled Casares Rosa to a 7-5 win of the first set, Wang blanked Cornell's sixth player in the second set, 6-0, sealing the 4-1 win for the Lions.
Columbia returns to the Dick Savitt Tennis Center on Friday to continue Ivy League play against Penn at 1 p.m.
