ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Columbia lightweight rowing team dropped a pair of tight races to Navy Saturday morning. The varsity eight was edged by just two seconds in the first race of the day as the Midshipmen took the WIT Cup for the first time since it was reintroduced in 2014.

The teams battled through some big crosswinds that sped up to 20 MPH as the day went on adn heavy chop in the first 1,000 meters with improved conditions in the back stretch. Navy clocked in at 5:54.6 while the Lions pulled in with a time of 5:56.0. 

The margin was even closer in the second varsity eight with the Mids winning by 1.4 seconds. Navy finished the sweep in the third with three boats finishing ahead of the Lions' crew.

Columbia will finish a busy day of racing when they host Georgetown and Harvard this evening at Overpeck Park. Racing is slated to begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
