NEW YORK, N.Y.—No. 49 ranked Harvard claimed three consecutive singles matches en route to a 4-3 women’s tennis victory over Columbia Friday at Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
After Columbia took the doubles point, Harvard tied the match at 1-1 when Annika Ringblom registered a 6-1, 6-3 No. 6 singles win over Columbia junior Adi Milstein. Harvard went up 2-1 when Irene Lu won a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Columbia senior Vivian Cheng at No. 5 singles. The Crimson made it 3-1 when June Lee registered a 7-6, 6-2 win over Columbia sophomore Andrea Kevakian at No. 2 singles. Columbia first-year Ali Pollack took a 7-6, 6-1 decision over Harvard’s Lexi Milunovich at No. 4 singles. That made the score 3-2 with two matches still being played.
Harvard (16-6, 4-0 Ivy League) claimed the team victory and decisive fourth point when Jenna Friedel won a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 match over Columbia junior Rima Asatrian at No. 3 singles.
Columbia junior Alexandra Solovyev closed out the day by winning her third consecutive match at No. 1 singles, a 7-6, 7-6 (11-9) win over Harvard’s Erica Oosterhout. It was Solovyev’s third consecutive win at No. 1 singles.
Columbia took a 1-0 lead after it claimed the doubles point. Solovyev and Milstein made quick work of Harvard’s Gonzalez/Milunovich with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. The other two matches were long, back-and-forth battles but Columbia’s Pollack and Cheng registered a 6-2 win over Harvard’s Lu/Ringblom for the point. A senior, Cheng is competing in her final home matches this weekend.
Columbia (5-13, 1-3 Ivy League) is back in action tomorrow when it hosts its final home match against Dartmouth at Dick Savitt Tennis Center. First serve is at 2 p.m. The contest marks Columbia’s Senior Day as the team will honor lone senior Vivian Cheng before the match.
