DERBY, Conn. – Yale used a strong start of the gates in the varsity eight to top the Penn and Columbia heavyweights to retain the Blackwell Cup on its home water Saturday morning. In all, the Bulldogs were victorious in all three events.

In the varsity eight, Yale blitzed the other two crews out of the gates and the Quakers built separation over the Lions halfway through the race. The Bulldogs finished in 5:35.3 and had an open-water win over second place Penn.

Columbia pulled in third in the second varsity eight, falling five seconds shy of Penn. In the third varsity, a pair of Bulldogs crews competed against the Lions, who turned in a time of 6:18.9.

Next week, Columbia takes on Syracuse and Boston University for the Doc Lusins Trophy on Saturday, April 22.
