BRONX, N.Y. — The Columbia baseball team topped Fordham, 6-1, Wednesday evening in non-conference action. The Lions (10-21) jumped out to a three-run lead thanks to home runs from unlikely sources. Joe Engel, who hit a two-run blast in the second, and Matt Karo belted a solo shot in the third for their first career dingers.

Starter Nick O’Brien set the tone on the hill, facing the minimum in his three innings of work. He allowed just one walk and struck out a pair to earn his first collegiate victory.

Kyle Bartelman and Liam McGill notched RBI singles in the sixth and seventh to make it 5-0.

Fordham (18-15) broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second for Luke Stampfl, who poked a base-hit through the right side. However in the eighth, Chandler Bengtson launched his fifth homer of the year over the fence in center for another insurance run.

Bengtson and Engel each finished up 2-for-3.

Seven relievers teamed up to toss seven innings of one-run ball and held the Rams to just five hits.

Columbia is slated to begin a four-game series at Princeton this Saturday, April 22 with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m. All four contests will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
