NEW YORK — The Columbia women's rowing team wrapped up the 2017 spring season at the Ivy League Championship on Sunday at Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey. The Lions finished sixth overall, earning their best team points finish in four years.

Four of Columbia's five boat classes qualified for the Grand Finals, including the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4A. The eight clipped Cornell at the finish to take third in the morning qualifier and earn a spot in the Grand Finals. Meanwhile, the four finished a strong second in the morning heat, six seconds behind Yale and 11 seconds ahead of Harvard, to earn its place in the Grand Finals. Columbia also reached the Grand Finals in the Varsity 4B and 4C.

The Lions finished sixth in both the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4A, while the Varsity 4B took fifth, less than five seconds from a medal position.

"Our women stepped up and raced with a lot of guts against one of the fastest fields we've seen to date at an Ivy League Championship,” said head coach Scott Ramsey. “At the end of the day, we had two of three NCAA boat classes qualify for the Grand Finals and four of five boats in the Grands overall. We'll learn everything we can from this experience and use it to get better.”

Seniors Giovanna Crozier-Fitzgerald, Lilli DeBode and Elena McGahey put the finishing touches on their collegiate careers in Columbia's Varsity 8+. Seniors Skyler Samuelson, Emerald Smith and coxswain Erica Glaser also rowed for the final time as Lions in the Second Varsity 8+. The same was true for Maggie DeVlieger and Taylor Fogg in the Varsity 4B.

“We'll lose some strong leaders in our senior class, but our returners are eager to step up and lead the charge in the offseason,” Ramsey added. “We have a big incoming class of freshmen that will add depth to the squad in the fall as well, and we're looking forward to welcoming them in the coming months.”
