CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Columbia field hockey team was shutout by William & Mary, 3-0, Sunday morning in a neutral site contest. The Lions dropped to 0-2 on the young season.

The Tribe (3-1) fired off 16 shots in the opening frame and took a 2-0 advantage into the locker room, despite six saves from goalkeeper Katie Dempsey.

Cata Days started the scoring in the 11th minute on a hard shot that went into the far side of the net. Cammie Lloyd made it 2-0 after camping out in front of the goal and receiving a long pass from Katelyn Rennyson in the 31st minute.

The Lions’ first shot of the game did not come until the 17th minute after drawing a penalty corner.

Five minutes after intermission, Lloyd potted her second of the game with a shot that deflected off of Dempsey’s pads to extend the margin to three.

Columbia put some sustained pressure late after generating a penalty corner in the 63rd minute. Unfortunately for the Lions, two were blocked, another was stopped by the William & Mary netminder and a third try by Kelsey Farkas went off the post as they Tribe went on for their third consecutive victory.

Maeve Doherty had a team-high four shots. Dempsey finished with 12 saves.

The Lions are back in action Friday, September 8 when they take on Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
