VESTAL, N.Y. – A header goal by Alex Bangerl proved to be the difference as the Columbia men's soccer team defeated Binghamton, 1-0, today's road game. With the win, the Lions stay unbeaten at 3-0-2.
In the 11th minute, the Lions drew a corner kick, as Nike Azuma sent a ball into the box off his left foot. Bangerl had the initial touch, that was saved short of goal by a Bearcat defender, but Arthur Bosua kept the ball in play, sending it into the air with his right foot. The flick by Bosua was just enough to find Bangerl's head once again, and was knocked into the goal to give Columbia a 1-0 lead.
The Lions did not find the net again, but went into halftime holding a 7-5 advantage on shots, which continued in the second half when Columbia led Binghamton 5-2 on shots. The Bearcats did get three shots on goal, but Dylan Castanheira was there for all three saves, picking up his second shutout of the season.
Bangerl's goal was his first of the season and fourth of his career. The assist by Bosua gives him three on the season, and makes it seven points through five games. Bosua led the offensive attempts, firing away four shots, while Bangerl, Vana Markarian, and Francisco Agrest had two each.
Columbia is back in action on Tuesday night in a 7 p.m. contest at Hofstra.
