NEW YORK – The Columbia field hockey team won its fourth-straight after topping Brown, 4-0, in both teams’ Ivy League openers Saturday morning. The Lions (4-3, 1-0) received two goals from Maeve Doherty, who has scored in five consecutive contests, and a goal and two assists from Michelle Thompson.

Columbia held the Bears (1-6, 0-1) without a shot on goal to help Katie Dempsey earn her first career shutout.

Columbia slowly built momentum as the first half went on, maintaining possession and drawing multiple corners. In the 28th minute, Thompson scooped up a loose ball in front of the net and tucked it under the goalkeeper’s pad for her fourth goal of the year.

The Lions did not waste any time after halftime and doubled their lead on a fast-developing play in the 37th minute. Jennifer Trieschman found Danielle Buttinger, who fired a shot that went of a defender’s stick.

Doherty finished the scoring with scores three minutes apart, both on corners.

The shutout was the first clean-sheet for Columbia since a 5-0 victory over Bryant on October 11, 2015.

Columbia will wrap up its home stand Sunday, September 24, against No. 21 Saint Joseph’s. Game time is set for 12 p.m. Admission is free and the game will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network.
