PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Columbia junior women’s tennis player Andrea Kevakian won two matches to claim the Flight B Singles Draw on Sunday at the Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational. Kevakian’s title marked Columbia’s second championship at this weekend’s 21st annual Cissie Leary Invite as senior Adi Milstein and first-year Christie Wan teamed to win the Flight A Doubles title on Saturday. Columbia was the only program to claim two titles in the three-day event at Penn’s Hecht (Levy) Tennis Center.

Kevakian advanced to the championship match after she defeated Penn’s Lina Qostal 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals. She then claimed the title with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Princeton’s Nathalie Rodilosso. Kevakian won four straight matches over the weekend.

On Saturday, Milstein and Wan won their fourth straight match to capture the Flight A Doubles championship. Milstein and Wan won three consecutive matches on Saturday for the title, defeating Drexel’s Benhadi and Bunch 7-6 (3) in the title match. The duo also defeated Cornell’s Sha/Ilinuma 7-6 (3) and Penn State’s Svarre/Wikberg 6-2.

Two other Lions—first-year Jennifer Kerr (Singles Flight A) and Milstein (Singles Flight B)—advanced to singles semifinals. A variety of other Lions also experienced success this weekend. Columbia’s complete results with scores are listed below.

The invitational featured two flights of singles and two flights of doubles in double elimination format. All players were guaranteed three matches, while each doubles pair was guaranteed two matches. Individuals and doubles pairs representing nine different schools competed in the event including Columbia, Cornell, Drexel, host Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Richmond, St. John’s, Temple.

First contested in 1997, the Cissie Leary Invitational honors the memory and legacy of Cissie Leary, head women’s tennis coach at Penn from 1977-96. Leary guided the Quakers to 16 winning seasons, compiling a career record of 229-119. In 1995, her team was 16-7 overall, 6-1 in the Ivy League and advanced to the NCAA East Regional. Leary passed away in November, 1996 following a long battle with scleroderma. The tournament has been held every year since in her honor.

Columbia women’s tennis is back in action at the ITA All-American on Sept. 30-Oct. 8 at Pacific Palisades, Calif. and at the Bulldog Invitational, Oct. 6-8 in New Haven, Conn.
