BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Columbia wrestling team earned its first dual win of the season over Clarion, before falling to Hofstra today at LIU Post.

With the split, the Lions stand at 1-6 on the season, with a pair of duals up next weekend.

In the first dual of the day, Clarion got off to a fast start, picking up bonus points in two of the first three matches, but Columbia held steady, as Alec Kelly scored a tech fall of his own with a 17-0 victory at 133.

After a 6-1 win for Jacob Macalolooy at 149, Markus Scheidel gave Columbia bonus points again via a 19-10 victory in the 157-pound bout. Those two started a streak of five consecutive triumphss for the Lions, as Laurence Kosoy, Tyrel White, and Anthony Piscopo all picked up decisions to help Columbia take a 22-11 lead.

Although Clarion was able to fight back with a victory at 197, Garrett Ryan closed the match out, beating Toby Cahill 5-3 to seal the 25-14 victory.

Hofstra got out to a 13-0 lead in the second dual of the day, taking bonus points in two of its first three wins. Macalolooy earned his second victory of the day, topping Ryan Burkert 9-2 to sway the momentum back to the Lions, who once again impressed in the middleweights. Scheidel and Kosoy picked up close decisions at 157 and 165, before White topped Anthony Oliver at 174 to cut the lead to 13-12.

The Pride would not be denied however, closing out the match with the final three victories, including a 2-0 win for Mike Hughes in the much anticipated heavyweight showdown against Ryan.

Columbia is back in action next Saturday at Sacred Heart, before hosting a 1 p.m. dual against Binghamton on Sunday, Jan. 14.
