ITHACA, N.Y. – Columbia posted a pair of wins against No. 10 Cornell, as the Big Red earned a 33-5 victory over the Lions in the Ivy League opener.
With the loss, Columbia falls to 3-10 in dual matches, while Cornell improves to 8-3.
In a match that started at 197, Columbia’s Jacob Young saw his first dual action of the spring, battling the No. 3 ranked Ben Darmstadt. Young made it out of the first before Cornell claimed a 6-0 advantage with a pin in the second period.
Garrett Ryan would cut into the Cornell lead, thanks to a trio of takedowns against Ben Honis. The No. 16 ranked Ryan improved to 23-4 this season with a 6-4 win, improving to 14-2 in his career during Ivy League duals.
Cornell went on to post bonus-point victories in three of the next four bouts, before the Lions came away with a win at 157. No. 13 Markus Scheidel was able to out-last Fredy Stroker, 4-2, as the senior improved to 12-1 this season with his 97th career win.
Columbia came close to another victory late in the match at 174, but Brandon Womack handed Tyrel White a 2-0 defeat.
Along with the dual, the Lions sent 10 competitors to the Messiah Open in Grantham, Pennsylvania. A total of six Lions found a spot on the podium, including JP Ascolese, who was second at 141, with Chris Scorese and Daniel Herman taking third at 133 and heavyweight, Donny Donnelly finishing fifth at 174, Max Elling claiming sixth at 165, and Will Kui advancing to the seventh place match in the 141-pound bracket.
The Lions have a pair of matches on the schedule for next weekend, with a trip to Princeton scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, before a dual at Penn at 2 p.m. the following day.
