PHILADELPHIA - A 5-5 match split would not be enough, as the Columbia wrestling team dropped a tight dual at Penn, 21-18.
The Lions rattled off three straight wins at 141, 149, and 157 to tie the match, and then tied it again after the 174-pound bout, but two victories in the upper weights proved to be enough for the Quakers.
Penn took a 10-0 lead from the outset, picking up a first period pin at 125 from Daniel Planta before Gianni Ghione handed Alec Kelly a 13-3 major decision.
The streak would then begin for the Lions, starting at 141. JP Ascolese was once again close to a major deision, topping Thomas DiGiovanni, 12-6, for his second victory of the weekend. At 149, Jacob Macalolooy came up with a 14-1 major decision over Joe Olivia, before Markus Scheidel tied the team scoring up in an 11-6 decision against Joe Velliquette.
In the 165-pound bout, May Bethea gave the Quakers four huge team points, earning a 13-5 major decision against Laurence Kosoy. The Lions would fight back however at 174, as Tyrel White picked up bonus points for the second time this weekend, thanks to a 13-4 major decision of Brian Krasowski.
With the match tied 14-14, the final three bouts proved they would sway things either way.
Andrew Psomas was up first for the Lions against Joe Heyob. The Quaker 184-pounder led 3-1 after two periods, but Psomas added a reversal from the bottom position to make it 3-3 in the third. Quickly thereafter, Heyob scored two points of his own on a reversal, but Psomas escaped to make it 5-4. A late shot attempt by Psomas would not be finished, as the 184-pound match went to Penn, who led 17-14.
The Quakers went on to clinch the team win at 197, with Frank Mattaice posting a 13-4 major decision over Michael Bulkin. The Penn win would not deter heavyweight Garrett Ryan, who dominated Tyler Hall to a 19-5 major decision in the final bout of the dual, improving to 25-4 on the season.
