MIAMI—No. 38 ranked Florida International registered a closely contested 4-2 women’s tennis decision over Columbia Thursday afternoon at the FIU Tennis Center. The match marked the second of Columbia’s three-match 2018 Spring Break Trip to Miami and marked the first nationally ranked team that the Lions have faced this year.
Columbia claimed two singles victories—sophomore Ali Pollack won a 6-1, 7-5 decision over FIU’s Mina Markovic at No. 5 singles and junior Andrea Kevakian claimed a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over FIU’s Sandra Bozinovic at No. 4 singles. First-year Jennifer Kerr was on her way to a win at No. 2 singles but Nerma Caluk clinched FIU’s team win with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Columbia first-year Sarah Rahman.
FIU opened the day by taking a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point with wins in two of the three matches. Columbia first-year Christie Wan and senior Adi Milstein captured their No. 1 doubles match with a 6-4 win over FIU’s Maryna Veksler and Ulyana Grib. Veksler and Grib entered the match ranked No. 9 nationally in doubles.
FIU (7-1) took a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win when No. 4 ranked Andrea Lazaro claimed a No. 1 singles decision over Columbia first-year Christie Wan. Pollack cut the deficit to 2-1 with her win, followed by a 7-5, 6-2 win by FIU’s Ulyana Grib at No. 3 singles. After Kevakian registered her win to cut the deficit to 3-2, Caluk secured FIU’s victory.
“We’re very excited for Adi and Christie on their top-10 win,” Columbia Head Coach Ilene Weintraub said. “When playing their best, they can beat anyone in the country. Overall, it was great to see every player fighting hard for every point. We keep getting more comfortable and confident with each match we play. I look forward to tomorrow’s match vs. Florida Atlantic.”
Columbia (6-5) closes its Florida Spring Break Trip tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match at Florida Atlantic.
