NEW YORK - In the final non-conference dual of the spring, the No. 13 ranked Columbia men's tennis team topped Buffalo, 7-0, at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. With the win, the Lions improve to 11-3 overall, while the Bulls fall to 7-8.
The first doubles match to finish went to the Lions, as Rian Pandole and Jackie Tang bested Ethan Nittolo and Matthew Johnson, 6-4. After Jack Lin and William Matheson dropped a 6-4 match to Petr Vodak and Vidit Vaghela in the top doubles bout, all eyes went to the second match. Adam Ambrozy and Michal Rolski were locked in a tight one with Hao Sheng Koay and Villhelm Fridell, which went to a tiebreaker. The Columbia pair were able to prevail, taking the match, 7-6 (7-4) and giving the Lions a 1-0 lead in the team standings.
After Timothy Wang cruised to victory in the No. 6 singles match over Nickolas Frisk, 6-0, 6-3, a trio of Lions were within a point of ending their own singles matches. Lin came away victorious first, topping Nittolo, 6-2, 6-1, which was closely followed by Austen Huang's 6-3, 6-2 win against Vondak, which clinched the team win for the Lions.
Buffalo and Columbia decided to play out the remaining three singles matches, which gave Tang an opportunity to get a win from the top spot. The sophomore did just that, defeating Koay, 6-0, 6-4, making the team score 5-0. The Lions went up 6-0 when Keyser came back to get by Vaghula in a super-tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. In the final remaining match, Ambrozy made it a clean sweep with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) win, in a match that he trailed 5-2 in the first set.
Columbia opens Ivy League play next Friday, April 6, with a 1:00 p.m. match at Penn, before hosting Princeton on Sunday at the same time.
