LEONIA, N.J. – The No. 1 Columbia lightweight varsity eight captured the Dodge Cup with a convincing victory over No. 4 Yale and No. 7 Penn in a busy day of racing at Overpeck Park. The Lions’ second varsity eight remains undefeated after a wire-to-wire win over the Bulldogs as well.

The varsity eight win claimed the trophy for just the third time since 2003 and for the first time since the 2015 campaign.

In the race for the hardware, it was Yale who came out of the gates with a two-seat lead 500 meters in. Columbia made its first move at the 750-meter mark and gained the lead for good at the halfway mark of the race. The Lions then shifted into their final gear and wound up taking down the Bulldogs with about a boat length of open water.

The Lions’ second varsity had become accustomed to coming from behind in their previous wins, but after a strong start, Columbia was in front by five seats in the first 1,000 meters. The Lions then exploded in the second leg of the course and Penn and Yale could not match Columbia’s speed as it went on for a first-place finish.

Yale came up victorious in the third and fourth varsity races to start the morning. In the third varsity eight, the Bulldogs, Lions and Quakers lined up about a length behind each other in the first half of the course. The boats remained just about in that order with Yale inching out to an open water win and Penn only able to come within bow-to-stern of Columbia’s boat. The Bulldogs’ fourth varsity led for virtually the whole way. The Lions incrementally build a lead over Penn and by the time the Quakers made their final push, the deficit was too large to overcome as Columbia took second place.

The Lions are back in action next weekend for a pair of regattas. Columbia begins competition against MIT and Cornell for the Geiger Cup on Saturday, April 21.
