NEW YORK – The Columbia track & field teams will compete in 16 events at the NCAA East Prelims, hosted in Tampa, Florida on May 24-26. Both the men and women qualified eight different events, with the women's 4x400m relay sending an additional three athletes to Tampa.
COLUMBIA MEN'S QUALIFIERS
Josiah Langstaff | 17th | 800m | 1:48.40 | Ivy League Outdoor Championships
Langstaff returns to the NCAA East Prelims for the second straight year in the 800m. The junior clocked a season best 1:48.40 when he finished second at the Ivy League Outdoor Championships. Langstaff went on to anchor the 4x800m relay team to victory during Outdoor Heps. He heads to Tampa with the 17th best time in the 800m.
Alek Sauer | 42nd | 800m | 1:49.77 | West Point Twilight
After sitting out the entire outdoor season due to injury, Sauer came back to run the 4x800m relay at Outdoor Heps, helping the Lions to a title with a 1:50.48 split on the third leg. The junior went on to clock a 1:49.77 during the West Point Twilight meet, to return to the East prelims for the third straight year in the 800m.
Sam Ritz | 30th | 1,500m | 3:44.72 | Virginia Challenge
Ritz moved up to the eighth fastest 1,500m runner in Columbia history when he ran 3:44.72 during the Virginia Challenge. This is the second straight year Ritz will run in the 1,500m at the East Prelims, after he helped Columbia to a 4x800m relay title at Outdoor Heps for the third straight year.
Brian Zabilski | 20th | 5,000m | 13:59.18 | Virginia Challenge
This is the second consecutive season Zabilski, the Ivy League Champion in the 5,000m run, has qualified for the East Prelims. The junior became just the third Lion to run under 14 minutes in the event, when he clocked a 13:59.18 in the 5K during the Virginia Challenge.
Kenny Vasbinder | 23rd | 5,000m | 14:01.37 | Virginia Challenge
The sophomore makes his first trip to the East Prelims, after an impressive season on the track. Vasbinder took home the Indoor Heps 5,000m title, then went on to finish second at Heps in the Outdoor 10,000m, and fifth in the 5,000m. He enters the Outdoor Prelims with a 14:01.37 season best, which ranks fifth in program history.
Ryan Thomas | 28th | 5,000m | 14:04.21 | Virginia Challenge
The back-to-back Outdoor Heps Champion in the 5,000m run, Thomas is taking his second straight trip to the NCAA East Prelims at that distance. The senior won the Ivy League Cross Country title in the fall, and has a season best of 14:04.21 in the 5,000m.
Lucky Schreiner | 39th | 5,000m | 14:09.88 | IC4A/ECAC Championships
After earning his first All-Ivy League honor from the cross country season, Schreiner backed that up this past outdoor track season with another. The junior was the runner-up in the 5,000m to Thomas at Outdoor Heps, and clocked a season best 14:09.88 during the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Daniel Igbokwe | 33rd | Triple Jump | 15.45m (50-8.25) | Florida Relays
The school record holder in the outdoor triple jump, Igbokwe qualifies for the second straight year with a 15.45m (50-8.25) effort at the Florida Relays.
COLUMBIA WOMEN'S QUALIFIERS
Akua Obeng-Akrofi | 19th | 400m | 52.75 | Florida Relays
Obeng-Akrofi visits the East Prelims for the third straight year, after going in the 400m all three years, and the 200m during her junior season. The senior was second this season at Outdoor Heps in the 400m and has a season best 52.75 to her name.
Sarah Hardie | 31st | 1,500m | 4:21.94 | Ivy League Outdoor Championships
Hardie will close out her career trying to advance to the NCAA Championships in the 1,500m. The senior, who was an Indoor All-American in the 1 Mile, ran a season best 4:21.94, which was good enough for fifth in program history.
Libby Kokes | 47th | 1,500m | 4:24.02 | Ivy league Outdoor Championships
Kokes makes her first trip to the East Prelims after a 4:24.02 in the 1,500m during the Ivy League Outdoor Championships.
Erin Gregoire | 44th | 5,000m | 16:31.45 | IC4A/ECAC Championships
Gregoire’s 16:31.45 in the 5,000m, which was good enough for second place at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, helped her qualify for her first NCAA East Prelims.
Abby McLaughlin | 10th | 10,000m | 33:53.19 | Stanford Invitational
McLaughlin returns to the East Prelims in the 10,000m a year after qualifying as a rookie. Her 33:53.19 from the Stanford Invitational helps her to the 10th best time this year in the East Region.
Nell Crosby | 6th | 3,000m Steeplechase | 10:03.28 | Virginia Challenge
Crosby has been a model of consistency in the 3,000m Steeplechase this season, with three runs all within 11 seconds of one another. The senior and school record holder won her first career individual Ivy League title this year in the event, and has a season best 10:03.28 form the Virginia Challenge.
Erin Melly | 32nd | 3,000m Steeplechase | 10:21.00 | IC4A/ECAC Championships
Melly moved into fourth place all-time in Columbia history in the 3,000m steeplechase, clocking a 10:21.00 to take fourth at the IC4A/ECAC Championships. This is the third straight year the senior has qualified for regionals in the steeple.
4x400m (Sule, Turner, Petersen, Obeng-Akrofi) | 16th | 3:36.39 | Ivy League Outdoor Championships
The 4x400m relay team of Iman Sule, Terri Turner, Sydney Petersen, and Obeng-Akrofi put up the second-best time in program history at Outdoor Heps, clocking a 3:36.39 for second.
