Jokubaitis Competes at Open Water Nationals
NEW YORK - Columbia women's swimming & diving sophomore Caitlin Jokubaitis
competed in the USA Swimming Open Water 5k National Championships this week, after qualifying for the event at the 2011 ECAC Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Jokubaitis, who qualified with a time of 17:41.82 in the 1650 free, traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to take part in the event on Saturday, June 10. The rising sophomore finished 38th out of 76 competitors, with an overall time of 1:04:44.09.
Open water swimming is an Olympic event that takes place in bodies of open water around the world. According to USA Swimming, "Open Water swimming presents a unique set of challenges to swimmers. There are no lane lines, walls or starting blocks to dictate what it takes to win, with the elements often playing a deciding role in determining the winner of an Open Water race."
Columbia alum Lauren Morford '07CC also competed in a race this past weekend, as she took part in the USA Swimming Open Water 10k National Championship on Friday, June 9th. The event, which was a World Championship Qualifying Event, also took place in Fort Lauderdale. She finished 16th out of 28 competitors, with a time of 2:27:34.77.
