BOX SCORE

NEW YORK – The Columbia women’s soccer team took the lead in the 55th minute on a penalty kick by Coleen Rizzo, but a good penalty kick in the 90th minute and a goal off a corner kick in the second overtime gave Lehigh a 2-1 come-from-behind victory.

With each team having played Saturday night, it took the initial minutes of the game for the pace of the game to pick up speed. Columbia’s Lexi Nichols recorded the first shot in the 10th minute, an attempt that was stopped by Lehigh keeper Ali Griffin.

Nichols’ attempt would be the only shot Columbia generated in the opening half. Lehigh would tally seven shots, including four on goal. Grace Redmon, fresh off Ivy League Player of the Week honors, stopped all four shots on net.

Columbia came out in the second half with an early scoring opportunity off a corner kick in the 49th minute. Erin Falk served up her second corner kick of the half into the center of the box where Beverly Leon was able to go up and head it towards the near post, but Griffin made a good stop to preserve the tie.

Griffin and the Mountain Hawks would give up the lead less than six minutes later though. A takedown in the box by a Lehigh defender gave Coleen Rizzo a PK attempt, which she in turn buried to put Columbia up 1-0. The goal was Rizzo’s fourth of the year.

Following the Lions’ goal, both offenses would struggle to put any pressure on the opposing defense, with Lehigh taking the only two shots until the final minute.

With 56 seconds left to play, Lehigh was awarded a PK after Columbia was whistled for a close foul in the box. Darby Wiegand went left and scored the game-tying goal, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime, Columbia put the pressure on the Lehigh defense, ripping four shots, but the Mountain Hawks blocked two, one went wide and the final attempt was saved by Griffin to send the game to a second extra period.

Just 86 seconds into the second overtime, Lehigh’s Paige Dyrek gave the Mountain Lions their second win of the season, scoring on a corner kick from Paige Elliot. Dyrek knocked the ball into the lower right corner of the goal on the cross for the game-winner.

Lehigh ended up outshooting Columbia 14-8, with half of its attempts on goal.

The Lions return to Ivy League play Friday when they visit Penn for a 7 p.m. matchup .
