Wrestling Tops Drexel, Falls to No. 16 Maryland and Rutgers at Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. - The Columbia wrestling team took down Drexel, 26-9, but fell to No. 16 Maryland, 27-10, and Rutgers, 30-6, at the 2012 Journeyman Wrestling/ASICS Northeast Collegiate Duals in Troy, N.Y. Saturday. Steve Santos improved to 11-0 on the year at 149 pounds with a trio of victories.

Maryland Recap

After dropping the first three matches to go down 10-0, Columbia rallied with three straight wins to even the match at 10-10, but the Terps would sweep the remaining bouts to secure the 27-10 victory.

No. 11 Jake O'Hara moved to 9-0 on the year with his third victory via major decision. O'Hara picked up four points for the Lions en route to a 12-4 defeat of Maryland's Danny Orem in the 157-pound match. No. 10 Steve Santos also remained undefeated (9-0) at 149 pounds with a 9-2 decision over the Terps' Lou Mascola, who entered Saturday's contest with a 5-1 record on the year. Josh Houldsworth notched an equivalent 9-2 decision in the 165-pound bout, toppling Josh Snook.

Rutgers Recap

The Scarlet Knights established an early 13-0 advantage on their way to a 30-6 defeat of Columbia. Santos and Nick Mills were the lone Lions to secure victories over their respective Rutgers' challengers.

Santos registered his 10th win of the season with a one-point (4-3) decision over three-time NCAA qualifier Mario Mason. At 197 pounds, Nick Mills locked up his eighth win of the year, as he shutout (4-0) Hayden Hrymack.

Drexel Recap

Columbia captured seven of ten matches to defeat Drexel, 26-9, in the Lions' final dual of the day Saturday afternoon.

Junior Penn Gottfried and first-year Joe Moita established a 7-0 lead for the Lions with victories at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Gottfried dispatched Jacob Goodwin with a 4-1 decision, while Moita notched his second major decision of the season, downing Jordan Hart, 10-2.

The Dragons tallied three points with a win at 141 pounds, but the senior co-captain Santos responded with six points for Columbia, pinning Garth Mahosky in 2:05. Classmates and fellow co-captains O'Hara and No. 13 Stephen West also earned wins at 157 and 174 pounds, respectively. O'Hara garnered a 10-6 decision over Noel Blanco, while West defeated Connor Moran, 6-4.

In between those two matches, Houldsworth recorded his second win of the day and his first major decision of the season, dropping Charles Aungst, 9-0, in the 165-pound match. Wyatt Baker capped the day with a 3-2 decision over John Max Wright at 285 pounds.

Columbia will take just over a month off from competition before heading to Evanston, Ill. Dec. 29-30 to compete at the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern. A total of 32 teams are slated to compete in the tournament, including 14 that placed in the top-25 at the NCAA Championships last spring.
