Parsons Sets School Record In Day Two At US Winter Nationals
AUSTIN, Texas - Several of the Columbia women's swimmers swam in day two of the 2012 AT&T US Winter National Championships on Friday, Nov. 30. Trials began at 10 a.m. at the Texas Swimming Center, and Columbia posted solid performances all day.
The first event of the preliminaries was the 200 medley relay, in which both squads for the Lions qualified for the 'B' finals. The morning heats also saw Alena Kluge in the 400 IM for the Lions, earning a 'C' finals spot with an 18th place finish at 4:23.42.
In one of the most anticipated performances of the meet for Columbia, Katie Meili swam her way into the championship final of the 100 breast with a sixth-place finish at 1:00.15.
The finals heats began at 6 p.m. and the quartet of Lexi Riggs, Meili, Christina Ray, and Mikaila Gaffey swam in the 'B' finals of the 200 medley, finishing with a time of 1:42.70, just a few tenths of second off of the school record, to finish second.
In 'C' finals of the 100 fly, Kristina Parsons swam a new program record time of 54.62, good for a third-place finish in the heat. After finishing 26th in the morning trials, she returned with an outstanding performance to break the previous program record held by Allison Hobbs '10CC since 2009. Kluge also returned to win the 'C' finals of the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.01.
Meili did not disappoint in championship finals, producing another a fantastic performance in the 100 breast. She broke the 1:00 mark, swimming 59.64, for a fifth-place finish overall. Meili, the Ivy League record holder in the event, was only tenths of a second off her personal best time of 59.44.
The final day of the US Winter Championships will start with preliminaries at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and the finals will follow at 6 p.m. A live webcast will follow all events for the duration of competition.
