Fencing Records Strong Showing at January North American Cup

LOUISVILLE - Twelve members of the Columbia fencing team racked up a plethora of top finishes once again, this time at the most recent Junior North American Cup held in Louisville last weekend.

Headlining the best performances by the Lions was first-year Justin Wan, who fenced his way to a silver medal out of 265 fencers in the men's epee under-20 competition. Fellow classmate Brian Ro finished just behind Wan, earning bronze in the same category.

In all, eight Columbia fencers earned top 32 performances, while a number of incoming Lions also had strong showings and placed among the best.

Joining Wan and Ro in the men's epee under-20 competition was first-year Jake Hoyle, who finished 11^th on the day. In men's foil, first-years Adam Mathieu and Harry Bergman placed 10^th and 19^th, respectively. Men's sabre featured an 18th-place finish by sophomore Michael Josephs and a 22nd-place finish by sophomore Geoffrey Loss.

Sophomore Emma Peterson represented the Columbia women, fighting her way to seventh-place out of a pool of 175 fencers.

A big 10-meet weekend awaits the Lions as Columbia returns to NCAA action at St. John's on Saturday, Jan. 26th and NYU on Sunday, Jan. 27^th.
