Nationally Ranked Fencing Squads Gear Up for Busy Weekend
NEW YORK - A big 10-meet weekend awaits the Columbia fencing team as the Lions return to NCAA action at the St. John's Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26th and the NYU Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 27th.
The Lions will kick off the weekend against host St. John's at 10:00 a.m. in Carnesecca Arena & Taffner Field House. Saturday also opens Ivy League action for Columbia vs. Harvard at 11:15 a.m. From there, the Columbia men will fence No. 1 Ohio State while the women take on the No. 4 Buckeyes.
The men will look to make a comeback against No. 2 Penn State after falling to the Nittany Lions by a 22-5 score earlier this season. The women will look for a sweep of the No. 5 Nittany Lions after surprising Penn State 15-12 in Happy Valley.
Rounding out the Saturday competition, the men will fence No. 3 Notre Dame while the women compete against the No. 2 Fighting Irish.
The St. John's Invitational will be partially broadcast by ESPN3 beginning at 2 p.m. Play-by-play announcer Ralph Bednarczyk will be calling all the action while former Columbia fencing standout and 2012 Olympian Jeff Spear will add the color analysis.
Sunday's NYU Invitational at the Jerome Coles Sports Center is slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. The men will first take on North Carolina while the women compete against No. 7 Northwestern. Both squads will then rematch with the Fighting Irish, Buckeyes and Red Storm in addition to taking on Wayne State.
Off to an undefeated start, the Columbia women are 7-0 in non-conference action, while the men sit at 6-1, respectively. Competing in their first major collegiate meet of the season at the Penn State Invitational on Jan. 12, the Lions won nine out of a possible 10 dual matches, as the women's team won all five contests, and the men won four out of five.
Following their successful start to the season, the Lions
found themselves ranked among the best in the first edition of the 2013 national
coaches poll released by CollegeFencing360.com earlier this week. The women
received a No. 3 ranking while the men checked in at the seventh position.
