NEW YORK - The Columbia women's golf team will hit the links for the first time this spring, traveling to Williamsburg, Va. to compete in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary from March 17-19. Additionally, junior Michelle Piyapattra will travel to Augusta, Ga. to compete in the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate beginning Friday, March 15.
The Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate will by hosted at Augusta State's Forest Hills Golf Club. In its sixth year, the three-day, 54-hole event will feature 18 teams and a total of 99 individual competitors. Each round will begin at 9 a.m., beginning with the first 18 holes Friday and concluding Sunday.
The 2011-12 Ivy League Player of the Year, Piyapattra will look to continue a strong junior season that included three top-15 finishes during the fall. The Corona, Calif. native posted her best finish of the fall at the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational, claiming seventh to lead Columbia to a fourth-place showing. Her best individual round came during the final 18 holes of the Nittany Lion Open where she shot a Columbia low-round record, 65, to move up from 48th to 11th on the leaderboard.
As a team, the Lions will begin the spring 2013 campaign in the 28-team C&F Bank Intercollegiate. For the second consecutive year, the C&F will be played on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort. The course, which will play at a par-71 and approximately 6,000 yards, is also home to the LPGA Kingsmill Championship each year and has been the site of the Michelob ULTRA Open (LPGA) and the Michelob Open (PGA) in the past.
The event is in its 25th year, but was played over 54 holes for the first time in 2012 following the move to Kingsmill. The three-day tournament will begin early Sunday afternoon and continue through Tuesday.
The 28-team field will feature: Boston College, Boston University, Columbia, Delaware, Fairfield, Gardner-Webb, Hartford, High Point, Hofstra, Lehigh, Longwood, Marshall, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Navy, Penn, Quinnipiac, Randolph-Macon, Richmond, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (Pa.), St. John's, St. Leo, Towson, William and Mary, Winthrop, Wofford and Yale.
First-year Monique Ishikawa made an immediate impact for the Lions in her first tournament at the collegiate level, finishing as the runner-up at the Bucknell Women's Invitational. The Kailua, Hawaii native took the early lead in Lewisburg, Pa. shooting a par-70 and remained in contention for the title throughout the event.
Junior Jane Dong played a consistent fall, posting two top-25 finishes. Sophomore Elizabeth Combs matched Dong with two top-25 showings, including a tie for 13th place at the Bucknell Women's Invitational.
The C&F Bank Intercollegiate is just one of three tournaments the Lions will participate in before the Ivy League Championships, being held from April 26-28. Columbia will host the Seventh Annual Roar-EE Invitational at the Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, N.Y. on April 12 before concluding the year with a trip to Barrington, R.I. to compete in the Brown Invitational.
