DIRECTIONS AND COURSE MAP OF OVERPECK PARK
NEW YORK - Columbia’s lightweight rowers will be hunting for some major victories this weekend as the No. 6 Lions take on four top-ten opponents at the Geiger Cup on Cayuga Lake Inlet in Ithaca and the Subin Cup at home on Overpeck Lake.
Last year’s Geiger Cup, held at MIT’s course on the Charles River, the Lions came up short against a strong Cornell eight.
It will not be any easier this year with a No. 3 Big Red crew looking to bounce back from a narrow loss to Yale in their last outing. Meanwhile, MIT enters the field as the eighth ranked team in the country, although they are coming off tough defeats to Dartmouth and Harvard in the Biglin Bowl.
Columbia faces a quick turnaround, immediately heading back to Ridgefield Park, N.J. to race Dartmouth and No. 9 Georgetown for the Subin Cup.
However, the Lions opponents will also be on short rest as the Big Green will head south after Saturday’s Durand Cup at Yale and the Hoyas will take a drive from Philadelphia after racing Penn and Princeton.
In last year’s Subin Cup the Lions varsity eight rowed well, but could not quite contain an excellent Dartmouth eight, falling by six seconds after a strong first 1000 meters.
In their last time out, the Big Green came in second to top-ranked Harvard but handily out-rowed MIT in the Biglin Cup while the Hoyas knocked off No. 9 Navy on the Potomac.
For fans interested in attending the Subin Cup races on Sunday, there will be a spectator bus leaving 116th Street and Broadway at 1 p.m.
