NEW YORK  - On Friday, Sept. 6, the Columbia women’s soccer team will kick-off its 2013 season opening weekend just a few miles away against Manhattan at 7 p.m. in Gaelic Park. Following the Lions' local matchup against the Jaspers, Columbia will return to the Columbia Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 8, to host Monmouth in its home opener at 1 p.m.

ABOUT THE LIONS: Columbia returns a strong experienced core from the 2012 campaign, including seven seniors. The Lions return their top three point scorers in Beverly Leon, Coleen Rizzo and Natalie Melo. Leon and Rizzo were both double-digit point scorers with 15 and 14 points to lead last year’s squad. 

Columbia also returns a number of solid performers on its defense, including 2012 All-Ivy League honorable mention honorees Catherine Troup and goalkeeper Grace Redmon.

ABOUT MANHATTAN: The Jaspers have begun the season with a 2-2 start. Manhattan will enter Gaelic Park on Friday night following a 1-0 win at Holy Cross on Tuesday. Senior Janie Schlaunder has picked up where she left off last season as the Jaspers' leading scorer tallying a team-high five points through four matches this year.

INSIDE THE SERIES: Columbia will look to extend its current 10-game winning streak over the Jaspers on Friday. The Lions lead the all-time series 16-5 dating back to the teams’ first meeting in 1986. In the last meeting in 2011, senior Natalie Melo scored her first career goal in the 78th minute of play to give Columbia a 1-0 home victory.

ABOUT MONMOUTH: With a 3-2 win over Seton Hall on Monday, the Hawks have jumped out to a 3-0 start to date. Monmouth will face Columbia on Sunday behind leading scorer Alex McTammey who has tallied two goals and one assist for five points. The 2012 Northeast Conference runner-ups are fueled by its upperclassmen, including 18 returning players.

INSIDE THE SERIES: A Columbia victory on Sunday, Sept. 8 would make program history, as the Lions are winless in the series at 0-4 against the Hawks. Monmouth handed Columbia a 0-1 loss in the teams’ last contest in 2011, the teams’ first meeting since 1988.
