POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH MARYBETH FREEMAN

NEW YORK - Two first-half goals by Christina Freibott and Katie Ruesterholz propelled the Columbia field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over UMass-Lowell on Sunday afternoon to snap a four-game losing streak. The Lions improve to 4-6 on the season and will return to action next Friday, Oct. 11 against Colgate for a 7 p.m. matchup.

After a strong start, Columbia went ahead 1-0 in the 12th minute after a penalty stroke was awarded. Freibott stepped up and ripped a shot into the cage for her second goal of the season.

Five minutes later off a penalty corner, Anna Scipioni led Ruesterholz perfectly to extend the margin to 2-0.

The River Hawks (1-10) countered well in the second frame and cut their deficit in half in the 60th minute. Janelle DeCamillis set up Melissa Effertz off a corner to make it 2-1.

The Lions finished the game strong in its own end, not allowing another quality scoring chance the rest of the way to come away with the victory.

Marlee Silverstein started in goal and made three saves to earn her first win of the season. Ruesterholz led the team with four shots.

Columbia held a 16-7 lead in shots and a 12-4 advantage in penalty corners.
