PHILADELPHIA - The Columbia men's swimming & diving team came up short at Penn Friday night it its 2013-14 season opener, falling by a score of 185-113 to the Quakers at Sheerr Pool.
The loss marked the first to Penn dating back to the 2009 season, when the Quakers overcame Columbia, 161-139. Penn won 12 events in total to capture the win.
The Quakers jumped out to a large lead by winning the first five events. Columbia's Kevin Quinn broke the spell by winning the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.83, while Drew May finished second in 1:51.65.
Later in the night, Quinn picked up his second win in the 200 yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:51.22. Columbia's Ben Xu finished just behind in second place, 1:51.35.
Jakl's second victory of the night came in the 100 yard butterfly when he finished with the fastest time of 48.94.
The Lions are back in action in less than 24 hours with their home opener at Uris Pool against Yale on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. Columbia will then finish the weekend against Army in non-conference action at home on Sunday, Nov. 17 for 1 p.m. meet.
