NEW YORK—Five Columbia women’s tennis players will enter the spring portion of its 2016-17 season ranked among the Northeast Region’s top players, according to the Oracle/ITA Rankings released on January 4.

In singles, Columbia has three players ranked among the region’s top-20. Sophomore Andrea Kevakian enters the new year ranked No. 9 after accumulating an 8-2 record in fall play. Kevakian is followed in the rankings by junior Rima Asatrian at No. 15 and freshman Ali Pollack at No. 19. Asatrian enters spring play with a 7-6 singles record and went 2-1 vs. nationally ranked opponents, while Pollack finished the fall season with a team-best .818 winning percentage and 9-2 singles record.

The doubles team of sophomore Star Makarome and junior Alexandra Solovyev enters the new year ranked No. 4 in the region. The duo put together a stellar fall campaign by advancing to the semifinals of the ITA Northeast Regional in New Haven, Conn. with four consecutive victories. Makarome and Solovyev also competed at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and concluded the fall season with a 9-5 overall record.

Columbia opens its 2017 dual meet schedule on Monday, Jan. 16 when it hosts Florida State at Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Columbia assistant coach Daneika Borthwick was a four-time All-ACC player at Florida State from 2011-16.
