New Haven, Conn. - After nearly one month off from NCAA competition, Columbia fencing will return to the strip for the most important weekend thus far of the season - NCAA Northeast Regionals.

The Lions will send their top 20 fencers to Yale this weekend, in hopes of qualifying the maximum of 12 permitted for NCAA Championships (March 23-26).

HOW IT WORKS

The qualification for the NCAA Championship is based on a formula comprising a 60 percent weight on regional performance and 40 percent regular-season meets. Regional champions for each weapon automatically advance, with remaining bids going to fencers based on performance and the region they compete in. Twenty-four spots in the epee, foil and sabre for both men’s and women’s competitors will be distributed.

TOGETHER

For the first time this season, men's and women's fencing unite as one squad. Columbia fencing unites under one umbrella for the rest of the season. The men's side goes into the weekend ranked No. 3 in the nations in the College Fencing Coaches Poll, while the women are ranked No. 2, after falling short of the Ivy League title to No. 1 Princeton. Columbia is the only team to have both their men's and women's squads ranked in the top 3.

THREE ON THE MIND

It is hard for Columbia fencing not to think about what is at stake going forward. The Lions are seeking their third straight championship, and the journey to achieving that goal begins this weekend. Columbia has won three straight championships once before (1987-1989). This team is trying to make history of its own.
