NEW YORK -- Ariel Leon scored her first goal of the season at 78:40 in overtime, as Columbia defeated Penn 1-0 at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue.

In the second half, there were several scoring opportunities, as Columbia earned three penalty corners, while Penn had five. The teams also had six shots each. Lauren Hanna led the way for the Lions with three shots, including two on goal.

The Lions and Quakers shared defensive plays in the first half, as there were only three shots on goal total for both teams.

After neither team scored after the first 70 minutes, the game headed to overtime.

In the extra session, Lauren Hanna had the first scoring chance, but Penn goalkeeper Alanna Butera saved the ball.

At 72:58, Penn had back-to-back opportunities, as Jamie Calahan and Meghan Rose each had quality shots, but both were saved by Gena Miller. Miller made seven saves for the game and now has four shutouts this season.

Ariel Leon subbed in at 74:06, and quickly changed the course of the game. After a play in front of the Penn net, Leon dove and made a reverse chip shot that went past the Penn goalkeeper. The goal gave the Lions a sudden victory.

Columbia improves to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play, while Penn falls to 6-7 and 2-2 in conference. This was the first Columbia victory over Penn since another 1-0 overtime win in 2001.

With seven victories, the Lions have tied for the third most wins in school history, and still have five games remaining. The team is also 6-0 at home this season, and have won nine game in a row at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue dating back to last year.

Columbia travels to Dartmouth on Saturday, October 20 for a noon game. The team then heads to Vermont to play a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, October 21.
