NEW YORK -- For the first time in school history, both of the Columbia University soccer programs have been recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with Team Academic Awards for their outstanding acheivement in the classroom.

The men's team was one of just 126 schools to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2008-09 academic year, while the women's team joined 325 other institutions.

Columbia was one of only 97 schools to have both programs honored by the NSCAA, joining fellow Ivy League schools Princeton, Penn and Dartmouth.

The men's team, led by first-year head coach Kevin Anderson, had a 3.30 GPA for the 2008-09 academic year while the women's team, fronted by 15-year head coach Kevin McCarthy, had an equally impressive 3.35 GPA. The women's team also earned the honor in the 2006-07 academic year.
