Women’s Tennis Hosts Hofstra, UMass, for Opening Weekend

NEW YORK – The Columbia women’s tennis team will open the 2012 dual match season this weekend, as the Lions host Hofstra and the University of Massachusetts, Friday, February 3 at 10 a.m. and Saturday, February 4 at 1 p.m. 

FOLLOW LIVE! 
Columbia Athletics will offer a LIVE BLOG for tennis fans to follow the match as it happens! Five different home matches will be blogged, including Hofstra, UMass, Maryland, Yale, Brown and Penn. 


The interactive blog will begin about 15 minutes before the match, and offer fans the chance to follow along live, and write in to ask questions and support your Lions! 

LAST TIME OUT 
Columbia women’s tennis is coming off a highly successful weekend at the Cornell Winter Invitational. In Ithaca, N.Y., sophomore Bianca Sanon won the Flight A singles bracket, and she and doubles partner Tiana Takenaga won the A doubles bracket as well. Sophomore Ioana Alecsiu advanced to the semifinals of the A singles bracket, while Katarina Kovacevic and Chelsea Davis both advanced to the finals of the B singles back draw. Kovacevic and first-year Crystal Leung also advanced to the finals of the B doubles bracket.

SCOUTING THE PRIDE
Hofstra is opening its spring season with the Lions as well. In 2010-11, the Pride went 8-9 overall, 5-9 in the spring season. They fell in the first round of the CAA tournament to James Madison, 4-0.

SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
Massachusetts is coming off its opening weekend against No.52 Boston College and No.63 Harvard, both of which were losses for the Minutewomen. Boston College took the win from UMass 6-1, while Harvard also won 6-1. Wins for UMass came in the Nos. 5 and 6 spots both days, where first-year Chanel Glasper was playing. Against BC, she won at No.6, 6-7, 6-1, 10-7, and at No.5 against Harvard, she beat Hannah Morrill, 7-5, 6-2. Glasper was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for her efforts.

Columbia will host Binghamton at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center, Friday, February 10 at 3 p.m.
